Pico In development

An operating system, written from the first instruction up.

Pico is our own kernel in C and assembly. It boots, multitasks, runs programs in user mode and mounts real filesystems.

Web browser

A desktop browser built on the operating system’s own web engine.

What runs today.

These are things the kernel does now, shown by tests and a boot receipt in which every proof must pass.

Boots and multitasks

The kernel boots on QEMU and shares the processor among tasks with preemptive multitasking.

User mode with capabilities

Programs run in Ring 3. System calls are stamped with capabilities and checked.

Real address spaces

Each process has its own address space, loaded from ELF files, with execve to start programs.

Drivers and storage

A driver model with PCI discovery and virtio-blk, a block cache, a virtual filesystem, picofs and FAT32.

Messages with deadlock detection

Processes talk through rendezvous IPC, and the kernel detects deadlock between them.

A boot receipt

Every boot produces a receipt of proofs. All of them must pass.
